Of creative policeman

My senior is defending an accused of a murder case. I assisted my senior during the whole trial. The accused has  no connection with the murder. My senior's killer cross-examination, made the police investigation officer sweat in the court. The judge expressed his annoyance at the investigation officer, for making blunders.
The police file was a book of jokes and its author (the investigation officer) acted like a clown in the court.
I was thinking that creativity should not be among the skills of  a Pakistani police official. As long as police will try to be creative, it is bound to falsely involve innocent people in criminal cases.
In another creative attempt by the police, a person riding on a motorcycle was stopped by the police. The rider stopped the bike near the police picket and told the police that he has committed a murder with the pistol in his pocket. Apparently, he told this to police without even being asked for. This story of the police is bound to give laughter fits to all judges from the trial court to the Supreme Court, who would hear the case.

How police obtain confessions

I came across a confessional statement of a murder accused while sorting out old cases. The accused person was a retired soldier. He had confessed before a magistrate that he had killed the deceased. He knew that he was innocent. We knew that he had not killed the deceased. The confession which was done before the court is hard to retract from.
We asked the fellow that why he confessed before the court when he had not killed the deceased. He narrated a very shocking story.
The police took him outside the police station at night. The policemen in the van had one large sack (blood-stained), some pieces of rope of various lengths (also blood stained), one butcher's knife (rusted and blood stained). En route from police station to riverside, the three policemen sitting with him were continuously talking about how they hacked to death people in previous cases.
They took the accused to a deserted riverside. He was taken behind some bushes. They tied his arms and legs with the ropes. All this was being done by police without saying even a single word to him. Finally they covered his head with a mask. One policeman located the accused's jugular vein, clutched it with his fingers. He placed the butcher's knife on the jugular vein. The accused broke down into violent shivering, choking and stammering. He begged to be forgiven for whatever price the police demanded.
The police wanted his confession, which the accused gave in the court the next morning.

Solving the police code

Police in Pakistan will remain corrupt as long as we have the prevalent political culture and a low literacy rate in the country. Majority of population is illiterate and is ever-ready to harass their opponents by causing them financial losses. Nothing harasses people more in Pakistan than the police.
Police runs on money or political influence. You can bribe the police and get your opponent falsely implicated in a case of any nature, including murder and gang rape. You don't have to bribe the police if the MNA or MPA, you elected in the last general elections, is in the power. In this case, one telephone of your elected leader will do anything for you in the police station. You can get yourself absolved from an investigation or harass your opponents.
The first thing a MPA or MNA demands from the party leadership soon after the formation of the government, is a co-operative district police officer (DPO). The  DPO is well aware of his mentor in his district and has no other option except to comply with orders of  the local politician. A co-operative DPO in the district than appoints lower-ranking police officials in police stations on the recommendation of the politician. That's how police works in Pakistan.

Cunning Cop

Constable Raja Masood works in the Jhelum Traffic Police. He has served in the Islamabad Airport Security Force for 11 years.

One day his SP in Islamabad “ordered him to do a favour”. Senior police officials seek favours from their subordinates in a commanding manner.
The SP’s mother wanted to give a black goat (Kala Buqra) in sudqa. The SP conveyed his mother’s wish to Raja Masood, wanting the constable to buy the goat and present it to his mother for sacrifice.

Raja went to an animal market and asked for the price of a well-fed black goat. He was quoted price Rs 24,000. Raja felt sweat on his forehead as the price was 8 times his meager salary. He was new in the force and was not familiar with bribes.

An idea struck his mind. He asked the seller to allow him to show the goat to the boss, which the seller allowed after a little hesitation.

Raja took the buqra in a Suzuki pickup to SP’s house. The SP’s mother came out and patted the goat, giving it her blessings (I guess), and asked the constable to take it to a madrassa so that poor students can have a feast.

Raja, who felt so relieved on this order, loaded the buqra in the pickup and took it back to the animal market.
He returned the goat to the seller, saying his boss did not like it. The ‘sadqa’ cost him only Rs 400 (pickup’s fare).
